Places to visit in Helsinki
Below you can also find some recommedations from our local organising team of places to visit in Helsinki.
If you like sea, history, wind and fresh air, the place to go is Suomenlinna Sea Fortress – a world heritage site. The boats to Suomenlinna depart from the Kauppatori Market Square, near the conference venue, and the journey to Suomenlinna takes about 15 – 30 minutes. Preferably I would reserve at least half a day for the trip. here.
In addition to visiting Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, where I lived my exciting early childhood, I recommend to visit one (or more!) of the many public saunas. The original smoke sauna in Kuusijärvi would definitely be worth the 20-km trip. Close to the centre of Helsinki there are fantastic spots for a true sauna experience, such as Kotiharjun Sauna, which has served sauna lovers for nearly 100 years. At the heart of the city, you may enjoy sauna and swimming in Löyly, or very close to the congress venue in Allas Sea Pool. The only regrettable thing in having the congress in June is that you will miss the possibility to dip yourself in zero-degree seawater, so please return in winter!
What better way to explore the city than to put on your sneakers and discover it by walking or running? In Helsinki city center, distances are short, so you can quickly move from one side of the city to the other on foot while exploring different neighborhoods, each with its own gems. I especially recommend taking the coastal routes from Töölönlahti Bay and Kaivopuisto Park! Also, the City of Helsinki has compiled great tips for routes of various lengths, which you can find here
Have you ever tried stand up paddling? It is easier than one would expect and gives a different view to seascape and architecture of Helsinki. You can rent the SUP, e.g., from Hakuna Matata Sup Rental, which is very close to the main railway station and city centre and allows you to SUP in the calm waters of Töölönlahti bay. If you already are experienced paddler, longer distances can be paddled, if you rent the SUP from, e.g., SUPREGATTA. Be aware of the weather forecast and rapidly changing weather conditions! After walking to and/or paddling you can treat yourself with traditional Finnish baked goods in Cafe Regatta.
If you like heights and are looking for the best views of Helsinki from above, head to the SkyWheel Helsinki by the Allas Sea Pool near the conference venue. Its glass capsules (and a sauna capsule – yes, you truly are in Finland!) offer stunning panoramic views of the city. Another excellent option is the Ateljee Bar rooftop terrace at Hotel Torni, which provides breathtaking views over Helsinki’s rooftops. For a unique experience, visit the Sky Room Helsinki rooftop bar at Clarion Hotel Helsinki, where you can enjoy the sunset from the 16th floor. Also, the Olympic Stadium Tower is a fantastic spot to get a bird’s-eye view of the city. Enjoy the Helsinki views
Have you heard of the Finnish public library system? There are nearly 40 public libraries in Helsinki and over 60 in the capital region! The Central Library Oodi Helsinki Central Library Home – Oodi is the most famous and on many tourists’ bucket lists, but why not visit smaller and more romantic libraries like the Richardinkatu Library Rikhardinkatu Library – Kirjastohakemisto or the Kallio Library Kallio Library – Kirjastohakemisto? They were built already in 1882 and 1912! Besides architecture you can check if you find literature in your own language!
Would you like to sleep outside or almost outside on an island in the vicinity of the center of Helsinki but enjoying the sea scenery and almost 24h daylight? Vallisaari is the most diverse natural site in the Helsinki Metropolitan Archipelago. Take the short boat trip to Vallisaari (see the schedules Regular service – Vallisaari) and rent a tree tent Gift voucher for TreeTents EcoCamp Vallisaari 2025 – Vallisaari or an archipelago igloo Archipelago Igloos Vallisaari – Vallisaari! Note that there is a limited capacity for the accommodation.
